Today with the headlights on I noticed just the side light bulbs were on. After about 5 mins the lights suddenly came on but if I tried to flick to main beam they went back off. As I put them back to dip beam there is a delay before they come back on?????????

Really could do with some help guys. Today only the side lights came on and after a couple of pulls on the stalk the dip beam came on but still no main beam. I stopped the car and started again and back to just side lights. Can someone point me in right direction as it's my daily and need to sort tomorrow if I can. Cheers

I would look at the switch first, take it out and check the plug/connetor is pushed on, same for the storks.
Clean earths to lights and check they are all ok then I run out of ideas and hope the fountain of knowledge on all things electrical in a VW, rubjonny knows.

You have an upgraded lighting loom then, are the old original wires and connectors still there? If they are plug them back in and see if that works, if it does it's the upgraded wiring that's at fault and at least you will have working lights till you can find out what's wrong with the upgrade.

Old wires not there. Will the high and low beam be separately fuses as when I pull the old relays out one of the sparked across so might have just popped a fuse?????

A lot depends on how the new loom was connected to the original wiring, but the original set up with the later fuse box according to the Haynes manual is….
Fuse no. 7, 10 amps, side and tail lights left.
Fuse 8, 10 amps, side and tail lights right.
Fuse 9, 10 amps, main bean right and warning light.
Fuse 10,10 amps, main beam left.
In my upgraded lighting loom the tigger for the relays to work is just off the passengers side light then the new wire runs across to the drivers side head light powering both lights.
