Does my starter motor look big in this?

Post

Hi all.... does this sound right to you?

Startermotor.MOV

As above, my 1.5D doesn't want to start… there are new plugs, fuel and 12V but it struggles to even turn.

Many thanks

The Starter motor on a diesel is a hurky thing, and if it isn't spinning the engine fast enough you don't usually get good compression to start.

Verify that the Starter is good.
Verify that your Battery to Frame and Frame to engine ground straps are good (Better to replace them if still oem.
Verify that you have good cable to the starter.
Adding a heat soak relay to the solenoid works wonders in keeping the high amperage of the ignition switch and directing the solenoid to start from the battery instead of going from the battery to the ignition switch back out to the starter solenoid.

You do have an engine that turns over by hand with no binds?

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Hello Briano, thanks for the quick thinking.

The engine turns by hand no problem and the car used to work well until I laid it up. Not sure if the video I posted can be viewed but the starter itself seems to spin erratically when tested. Thinking a recon unit may be the way to go but wanted to get thoughts on the sound of it.

Great suggestions on the other bits to it though.. will give that a go as well.

Cheers

If it spins erratically, then either get new of have it rebuilt…  I think I had to replace the one on my Beloved Diesel at about 285K miles.

Thanks, mine has done just a touch over 200k … so just run in I think.

Are you able to watch the video in my original post by any chance? Not sure if it's working.

Sorry can't help with recon units as I'm still on my original starter motor after 301,000 miles.
