Coolant gauge differences

Post

Hi All,

I've got an 81 GTI which I've changed the cluster to a later cabriolet one.  The coolant gauge appears to work normally as it shows warm up as expected and holds slightly to the left of upright whilst the car is moving.  Whilst stationary though the gauge reads upto slightly to the right of upright before the fan cuts in - whereas the old gauge would be 2/3rds across before the fan started.  I have also changed the rad fan switch, old one was 92 degrees and the new one is a standard 95-84, 102-??, could the fan be coming on too early?

Guess my question is whether there were differently calibrated gauges? or any other suggestions to what it could be?

Cheers gav

sounds like its just a slight variance between the different clocks, its not enough for me to worry if it was my own car anyway :)

That's how mine works (Motometer) even after I fixed it (it worked only occasionally before). While the original Motometer was out for repairs I had a VDO unit installed that showed the same readings as you described. Like John said,  I'd say it's fine and nothing to worry about.
