Changing number of headlights

Post

Hey guys,

I recently bought my first ever 1989 cabrio clipper (as seen in my profilce picture). It came with a debadged single headlamp grill, but I would prefer to change this to the twin headlamp, so I bought a new grill that came with the smaller headlamps.

My question is now how do I wire these extra lights up and what bulbs should I be looking for? I'm only 19 and this is my first ever project car so I'm a complete novice at this so please bear with me if this is a silly question.

Cheers!

Welcome to the Club first of all and congratulations on your new purchase, as wise decision I must say!

Now sadly I can't answer your question my twin lamps are standard but I'm sure someone will come along this the right answer.

It would help a lot if you could post up some pictures of your wiring so we all get a better understanding of what you see!

Have a good look around the headlight looms you may be lucky and the previous owner may have just tucked the spot light harness up out the way..

Sorry about the slow reply, I just got back from university, so now I can work on the car over the summer.

This is what I currently see. I don't think I can see the spot light harness. I don't have access to the new grill as its currently stored away in the garage which I don't have the keys for. From what I can remember only the spotlights were present, no bulb or bulb holders.

Cheers guys

follow the white wire out the back of the headlight plug, thats where the spot plugs in. it should also have a brown wire to it, which will be tapped into one of the browns there (usually also to the back of the headlight plug)

Would something like this be better? I've heard there can be a voltage drop so using a relay system like this can allow max voltage for the lights.

if you're after a relay light loom get one which is designed to power the main H4 bulbs from a relay as well as the high beam, since the dipped beam is what you'll be using most of the time.

the kit is designed to add a set of fog lights by the looks of it, you could just use the factory fog light wirign plug in the engine bay and fit the fog relay on the fusebox after swapping the fog power to B/20 as per factory VW wiring.

bit of scare mongering in that auction suggesting your loom will catch fire without one, its all fully fused by VW…

Hey guys quick update, I've managed to switch over the grills so now I have the preferable twin light grill.

I've also bought the wiring looms, just a quick question, where do I ground it? There's the brown wire yet I'm unsure where it goes.

if you look close inside the lamp housing hole where the bulb goes there is a moulded spade in there you pop the earth onto :)
