Car cutting out whilst driving!!

recently my car has had a strange problem (its a Golf GTI Sportline) when i turn the ignition it wont start, the immobiliser cuts out then lights on dash illuminate, then on the final turn the electrics cut out and die, the way round it was i banged the top of the dash and the electrics kicked back in and car started! but after it starts, it then keeps cutting in and out of power whilst driving, very dangerous. do you think it could be a loose connection behind the clocks?

any help would be appreciated as its a bit worrying when it cuts out whilst driving

yes take the column plastics off and check ignbition switch plug, trace the wires back to the fusebox. my guess is dodgy splicing has happened in the past. look for any old alarms/immobilisers these could be packing up, chop out and repair all the horrible bodgery which was used to install them
