What I'm struggling with is that a lot of decent component speakers are quite deep and I'm unsure what depth space I've got without modifying current door cards.
Can anyone tell me what max depth speakers I can get in? I don't want to take the door apart before to check this as then it will be in pieces and I need to get around in the car.

Are your speakers round or oval?

Focal were exactly the speakers I was after. Which ones exactly did you go for, that fit? Could you give me a link to them please?

They have a small crossover (fagpacket size) that comes with them, but can be lost in the inside of the door. I actually just put mine in the door pocket, which makes for a slightly lazy installation. It takes up a little space, but it means that the whole speaker installation can be removed with ease with the door card.
Sound was pretty decent and if you're careful with the stanley knife, you can get the tweeters to fit into the factory speaker housings. showing that you can get a round peg into a square hole! Looks pretty neat too. Only difficulty is getting the tweeters in & out without breaking the retaining lug! I managed 1 out of 2! Superglue to the rescue once again.

Thankfully I still had the box lurking in the back of the garage. The Focal units I put in the front were 130 A1 SG

Great, brilliant help! That's what I needed to hear. I've made an enquiry to car audio direct regarding the speakers as it looks like that model has been discontinued or replaced by a newer model, so I need to see what replaced it and if the physical size is the same. Hoping to get ordered this week you see, so I can fit at the same time as sorting out locking mechanism difficulties.
Thanks, it would be good if I can get tweeters in the factory holes as well. I'm sure a slow and careful process should do it by the sounds of it then…..

I think I'm also going for these for the rears…..

Just trying to find out if the depth/fitment will be ok on these as well, without modification to existing mountings.
