Hi all.. need some help please. my 76 swallowtail has weird bolts securing in the steering column. The other side of the bolt has a rounded head and the threaded end has these 90 degree angles cut into it.. no standard tool I have will remove it.. Any idea on what this bolt type is? What tool I need to get this out? Or any thoughts on other ways to remove it?
Thanks in advance

I think they are security bolts to stop the steering column/ign lock being bypassed? If so they are designed to be difficult to be undone....

Are they attaching the column to the car? If they are they'll be sheet bolts. Think I drilled mine out and bought new ones from my local VW dealer.

@sp8y - yes, they are connecting the steering column to the car body, they are located around the steering column cover area and normally hidden by the dash.

Pretty sure they're sheer bolts then, only a few £ to get new. You could try using a chisel to knock the rounded heads off and then some pliers to remove the threads, but I think I did drill mine out.

as brad says they should come out easy enough. Then replace them with Allen/hex boltsBrad. said

i found it was easier to get the mole grips on the back of the botls where you have pictured, more for em to bite on. then once cracked loose they wind out easy

I've done those type of bolts before by cutting a slot into the rounded head with a grinder or a hacksaw then just use a flat head screwdriver to remove. Worth a shot if you can get at it. Maybe not if you've got a tidy interor fitted though.
