Valet Key

Post

I only got a Valet key with the car, so can unlock all locks except passenger side. I was wondering how easy it would be to get an original cut so I can do all locks? Also whether I am doing any damage by continual use of the valet key? Thanks in advance

Did VW do Valet keys for these cars? There is no such key for my 1988 car just 2 sets of VW keys……
Has someone not just changed your passengers side door handle and not changed over the lock?

Previous owner said it was the valet key and it did have an original too which he had lost in a house move. I believe what he says as he was very honest about the car. It looks different to the original keys I've had previously. It's a '92 from Switzerland so may be different.

Just taken the lock out.  The the 5th and 7th dowel seem to be the ones stopping the mechanism. When I push them by hand they go down but then spring up slightly, stopping the lock. Does that add any more insight?

Yeah that's how my '87 key was. Done a temporary fix by removing the troublesome dowels.

If that works then all good. I can't see any benefit having a valet key which opens everything other than the passengers door, does the key do the boot and glovebox?

I know my brothers Jaguar XKR has a valet key which opens the drivers door only and reduces the engines performance which I can see is a good use for a valet key..

Yeah it doesn't make masses of sense. I can't find where I read about it now so I may be imagining things. It opens boot and glovebox fine. The lock on the passenger side probably just needs a good clean and re-greasing.

the driver and passenger locks should be the same anyway, so i cant see how the valet key would only work 1 side. perhaps its supposed to do everything but the ignition but a combo of wear and sticky locks means it works a bit strangely…

the mk2 golf did come with a valet key which iirc did all the locks except glovebox and possibly ignition. possibly boot too but now i think on it doubtful as you can just fold the seats if you need to get in there lol

looking at ETKA neither of those, the 92 cab would have had this one: 357837219A:
https://www.ecstuning.com/ES334154/

though I would go for the mk2 type if I was ordering a new one, just feels 'right' for a classic VW ;)the valet key is 357837185:

edit: looking closer though in ETKA the 191837219B MK2 Golf key is NLA and isnt even listed for a MK2 only the one above is shown now, so its possible that the later cab also used the MK2 AH key on the later ones before it was replaced by the passat version (191 = mk2, 357 = passat)
