Scuttle panel repair

Post

I’m going to repair the severe rot in the scuttle panel, and here’s how I did it for anyone else who is needing to do this job…

First remove the dash, windscreen, wiper motor, and in my case the bonnet.

Buy a replacement panel - I bought a klommer something one.

I see that is a LHD drive Panel do you have to Drill a hole for LHD and if so what are the measurements.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Yes it’s a LHD panel as that’s all that was available , so yes you have to weld up the holes in it and drill some new ones.
Briano, I’ll get you the size of the hole as soon as I can matey

Sooo, the new panel is a reproduction and it’s such a poor quality, I decided to cut it up for sections.
It’s a poor fit and the metal it’s made from I am not convinced is of a similar quality…
This also saves removing the front wings

I prefer to make the section/make the section fit nicely before I cut anything out.

Everything stays in place, more so than putting in a panel that’s not the right dimensions or shape. In fact I get to keep the bonnet gap

I need to fabricate a section for the inner

I’ve left the bit with the hole for the RHD wiper , so I can mark the new section from underneath - then I’ll cut that out

It’s clamped up tight to the existing , and both bits  repeatedly trimmed, until it’s a nice fit and importantly- to the exact same dimensions - I want the windscreen to fit afterwards!!

I intend to form a jiggled joint, with a 5 - 10mm overlap, but had to stop as I have lent my stepper tool out

So I put 3 - 4 tack welds in critical places and then tried the windscreen for size - looks ok and the job still makes sense , I haven’t made a major error (apart from ever starting the job!)

Then start tacking in place

I’ve been told that current practice is a light coat of acid etch primer before applying filler - so here goes..
