rear windows without the heater element....

Post

are people interested in them?

i know its a scene thing, i recently sourced a spare window for my mk2 rocco, and decided to take the rear heated element off and get rid of all of the lines for a smoother finish…
does anywhere sell them like this? what money are they? is it the sort of thing people want on there car?

sorry a very vague topic i know. but just realised i could do this… and internet returned very little info on it,
thanks,
Chris

are you going to share the info or looking to do it and turn a profit?

happy to share the info… but im not sure there is actually a point for it after research quiffs sell them without the elements on mk1's already… so may not be worth it.. for mk1 golfs anyway.. i use a makita glass polisher/scratch remover specifically made for glass… (not sure if there available retail) you need something that will run at around 4500rpm consistantly and hi torque. preferrably water fed, or failing that a friend with a squirty water bottle… and a 2" fine abrasive pad and zinc oxide paste mix, the paste i use is around 200+vat a tub but does go craaaaaazy far… and will not damage or scratch window… which is why you pay extra as cheaqper ones you will be left with swirls and scratches and end up doing more harm… you need the screen heated (through friction of buffing) 100+ degrees c or you are wasting your time as will never go but too high and screen will crack on you…
its not a 10 min job… you are probably talking a good 5 hours plus… anyone thinking of doing it if you need help just ask. :-)

the only bonus i can see of doing it yourself is you can use a original gti screen for example with green tints…

hope this makes sense and not garbled….

I took the original to a standard glass shop (try yell.com) and asked about geting a window cut to pattern the toughened. cost £40 all in, took a week :)

yeh i think mk1s are the easiest of all rear screens to do as flat ha

i think on newer cars above would be more cost effective…
