Official VIN Plate Location

Post

Hi all,

Had a search around and couldn't find a definitive answer on this. Where should the VIN plate be located on the slam panel? In the two holes marked or the the two holes marked 2? Thanks all.

It's position no 2, well at least on my 1983 car.

Thanks - engine is an '83 campaign GTi, but the car is an '87.

Previous owner had it in position 1 which must've been incorrect.

Just checked mine and has never been messed with since the day it was built.

In my 1988 Gti cabriolet it's in position 1 from the factory as the car has never had the plate removed as I've had the car most of it's life.
It's a different plate to the one on the tin top pictured, there should also be a paper label in the boot on the strengthening bar between the turrets

Could cabby's have had it in position 1? Whilst the rest have it in position 2?

Or was there a 'changeover' year?

My 1990 Cabby as it on 2 and so does my friends Sportline and that's a 1992.

But we are both in Austria of course!

I have the full colour brochure at home for the Cabby so I'll see if it contains a picture!

Position 2 on 83 tin top

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

Just had another look at my 1988 cabriolet and the VIN plate is position 1 and there is another plate with some other numbers in position 2

I think Mark above has hit on something here!

Cars over here, well at least in Austria don't have the same VIN plates as the UK.
In fact we have the one in position No2. which he is referring to and we call it the VIN plate!

My car which is untouched does have the two holes to fit one at position No.1 but it's not used.
So I'm guessing that different markets have different requirements for the amount of information on the plate, size and location!

Me thinks.

this is my 83 cabrio, as above the VIN plate in position 1 and another random one in position 2:

I dont have any history for it so cant say if original, all i can say is plate in spot 2 wasn't removed when the bodged paint job was done

Interesting thread…

Seems most are in position 1, even when looking through Google images.
