OEM Paint Manufacturer

Post

Just wondering if anyone knows who the manufacturer of the body paint / basecoat was (or was likely to be) that Volkswagen  used at the factory in the 1980s when these cars were being built?

I know they might have used different suppliers (e.g DuPont) of the solvent based paints that were used, but wondering if there was more likely to be from one manufacturer (possibly a German manufacturer)?

Asking the question prior to a paintwork repair, as I'd rather source the base coat from them so as to get the best chance of the metallic flake being the same.

Would not worry to much about it,  lots to consider old paint would had lead in, binder and pigment tech would be very old tech. clear coat used would also be old tech and most probs poor UV protection. If you have a good area on the car polish it get the bodyshop to do a spectro reading, do spray outs and compare the spray out to original.

Over hear on this side of the pond, in the late 70's and Early 80's The EPA wienies over here kept working on laws, and the manufactures had a great deal of Cruddy finishes.  Clear Coat that didn't fix to the Base, Base not adhearing to the primer.  Chrysler had a few cars that the Paint would leave the chassis.  You don't want to use old formula paints… Newer ones hold up well.

As said go to a good Automotive Body shop or Automotive Paint they can find the color match or they will scan your pain with a laser to get a good match.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
