There is water ingress into the boot and it seems to be coming through the hole near the boot latch after it has been washed. Any idea how it would get to that point and what I could do to resolve the problem?

Not quite sure which hole you mean? Have you got a pic?
If the boot seal is good, and boot lock and light seals too then it should be water tight.

when you open the boot lid and look down into the boot, you have the boot catch on the lip. behind it is a small well with a hole approx 7mm diameter. This is where a noticed a small pool of water and that his had dripped down into the boot. Pic to follow

Oh I see now. I'm sure I don't have that hole? I wonder if someone had drilled it to stop water settling around the lock?
You could put a rubber blanking plug in it, plus your hatch seal is too short which wont be helping, the two ends should meet. Perhaps someone will have an off-cut of seal they could give to you to fill the gap?

Thanks for that. Maybe you're right. Since then, I poured a glass of water onto the roof near the bootlid and within a minute, I had water coming in through the driver's side rear light cluster.
I guess I need to remove it and replace gasket/rubber? Or do people just silicone it?
AND WHY IS PHOTOBUCKET A LOAD OF SH**E? There should be a photo above - sorry

Sound like u need a new boot seal mate, i have a problem with water getting in my boot aswell but its getting in from somewhere else,
Do u have the rubber tubes at the top of ur boot lid that are for the wires for the heated screen? Check all down the sides of the boot lid as there are also holes down the sides which cud be letting water in,
On mine id noticed that water was getting in from underneath My boot seal and getting in underneath my headliner and dripping down the inside of the c pillar so ive siliconed round the whole boot and pushed my boot seal over the top of the silicone
Water get in everywhere mate its a b*****d lol

I think I'll get some new seals for the rear lights and the boot. Mine sounds the same as yours, where water was coming down the c pillar too. There was a lot of crud under the seal when I recently took it off and cleaned it. I think I will silicone it when I get the new seal just to make sure. Thanks

Another area worth checking as it gets forgotten about:
When the hatch seal was originally put in by VW they applied a bead of black sealer along the top of the seal by the hatch hinges to the bodywork and then around the corners ending a couple of inches down the sides past the corners.
If the hatch seal has been off for body repainting then maybe this sealer hasn't been reapplied. This sealer also goes hard after time.

From the factory my GTI had a sort of tar/sealant poured along the top of boot seal to stop water getting underneath the seal. I replicated this with some black silicon sealant.

I wondered what the black stuff was! yes it has gone hard, maybe i need to re-silicone it?

I would take a photo but my cars black with a black seal and black sealer. I fear it might not show much!

Don't use silicone. Go to your local body paint supplier and ask for Polyurethane windscreen sealer ( in black!)
