Mk2 to Mk1 seat conversion - NEW PART

Post

Right guys, I've been happy with the help I've had from folks on this forum so time to give a little back.

My MK1 seat collapsed the other day, base had rusted right through. Obtained some Mk2 seats and as advised here, they do fit if you swap over the handles. HOWEVER, what people omit to mention is that while the Mk2 seats have screw holes to fit the Mk1 handle on the other side, there is no welded-on retainer for the 8mm rod of the adjuster handle. Without a retainer it's not possible to fit or adapt the Mk1 spring and handle.

This is the welded retainer with plastic bush on the Mk2 seat. Nothing on the other side.

My solution is to make a 3D-printed part that can be clipped onto the other side of the seat using a jubiliee (hose) clip.

Part made in PETg - surface finish isn't as nice but it is much stronger than PLA.

PLA version which failed.

It took a few goes to make something suitable. The first effort in PLA plastic turned out to be too weak, partly because PLA is basically sugar and also because of the orientation of the layers in the print was not optimised.

The next version is working perfectly and is now fitted to my car. That is made from PETg (coke bottle plastic) which is much stronger and more durable. I also altered the orientation of the print to improve strength.

It's a simple part that anyone with a 3D printer can make and I plan to put the STL file up on Thingiverse so that anyone can use it and print it themselves. Alternatively anyone in the UK who wants a pair I can print on demand and send for £5 inc P&P.

Anyway, I hope it helps.

This is the part design if anyone wants to print it for themselves (not for commercial selling)
