I would not use washing up liquid at all as it contains salt!
I used some silicone spray in the grove and pushed the chrome trim in, it took me about a week to fit it as it was painfull pushing the trim in with fingers and a block of wood then finding the trim was not quite the right shape/bend then pulling it back out bending/shaping it a bit more and starting again. I would not want to do it again!
My trim was in 2 half and started at the top, its the corners that was the hardest as there is a curve and a bend there.
This was on my Mk1 Scirocco but guess the Mk1 golf is the same if you have the metal trim not the plastic chrome looking trim?

No I  just used my hands hence the blisters :lol:I would guess its differnet fitting the plastic trim as you don't wont to damage it as it might crack the plastic.
Sorry not seen the tool so can't be much help there

It's a right pain but doable. Thread the trim through the opening of the tool pushing away from you digging the wire nose of the tool into the groove in the rubber the seal. The tool should have a wheel on it that sits on the face of the new trim holding it down into the seal as you move along. I don't think I've got any pictures of it from when I did it but use lots and lots of silicon spray lubricant.

hi, replaced mine in about an hour, you need the right tool, get one from ebay, then get a bucket of hot water and put the chrome trim in, get some WD40 and spray it all round the rubber then start at the bottom in the middle and just go for it spraying more WD40 as you go, once finished give your motor a good wash off.

hi, the item number on ebay for the sort of tool you want is 221361639554, once you put the chrome insert in warm water all twists will come out fine and you'll be surprised just how manageable it is once warmed, have the water quite warm, not hot that can't put your hand in, but warm. glad to help
