Years since ive removed one, but I think it (axle / rear beam) will at least need to be lowered at the front

No, dropping the axle or Lowering it is the only way to remove the fuel tank.

There are Caveats of course.
Be-warned that the rear axle nuts and bolts can be corroded or rust bound.  Spraying them with a penetrative oil (not wd-40) PB-Blaster, Kroil or the like for a few days.  Brushing off all the rust that you can see, then using a Pneumatic Impact and 6pt socket will lessen the chance of Torque shearing the bolts/nuts.

If lowering or removing the axle be sure that you "clean, or chase" the threads prior to reinstall.

If lowering or removing look at your rear brake rubber hoses, if they are iffy, then source new and replace on going back.  You may want to remove them to prevent breakage…

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

I have had all the axle off for powder coating and redone all my rear brakes. I was just hoping I may be able to get the tank off without disturbing the brakes. The price I pay for not planning ahead I suppose.
