Dashboard/interior colour code

I'm having a brown centre console painted black at a paint shop, but they need the black colour code in order to match it with the rest of the black interior. Anyone know this? It's on a 1976 mk1. Thanks

Hi, I do not believe that there is a colour code for the plastic items. I have just restored my Mk1 with a blue interior and where the colour had faded, I used a vinyl dye paint by VHT, other suppliers are available. However this requires extensive preparation to achieve good results.

I believe you are better sourcing a black console from elsewhere to achieve your desired result. Your brown item is quite rare and could be moved on or stored away to maintain car originality at a later date.

Hope this helps.

Just went through your restoration thread, what an amazing result that was. Many good tips to save time and frustration there..

The painter said it shouldn’t be a problem as many of these things are painted from factory, but I do wonder how resistant it would be to scratches from cell phones etc.. I guess I would be worrying about it so maybe it’s better to source a black one as you say

Thanks for the comments.

I had a small issue with one off my lower blue dash panels and the interior trims above the door panels.

To save time I put them into a spray shop, I should have done them myself, as after a few weeks, they started peeling.

They really do need good preparation to remove many years of silicone polish / cleaner / etc before applying the special paint.

I did get a very good finish on the door trims, rear parcel shelf and front door speaker mounts and cubby holes. Please remember the original plastic in my case was a faded blue. However my drivers door trim was salvaged from a black trim.

I feel that the centre console will get all the knocks. You will probably get bits of brown popping through after time.

Assuming you have a tiptop,  I do have a black centre console in my garage, however, it does need a plastic repair as the original user mounted a telephone mounting or similar on one side. You can get plastic glue products to fill holes.

If you are interested let me know, I also have matching vdo or after market gauges to fit.

When I changed from blue / White /White.
To blue/ /Tan/Tan

I had a White Knee Bar, and White Center Console.

To renew them I scrubbed them with a product called Totally Awesome and a Scrubby….To remove dirt and wax.

I then Carefully used GREEN canned Brake-Kleen to sort of wake up the vinyl to make it sticky.

(Same thing I did to paint the seats with SEM Classic White originally). This spray lasted on the seats for about 6 years with no scuffing finally wearing off, with the kneebar sprayed as well).

I Sprayed a Vinyl Primer that promoted adhesion for the knee bar.  This time I opted for Duplicolour Satin Black Vinyl Dye (available at more parts stores over here.

It was a great Match to the Black Dash cap.

This was 2 years ago and it is holding up well on the knee-bar, same as when I painted the seats white and the knee-bar 9 years ago.

The center Console I scrubbed the heck of the thing with Totally Awesome, and used a plastic primer one it.
I followed with 5 coats of Krylon Fusion Satin Black.

Where the Console was prone to scuffing from my right foot your left I took a piece of Satin Finish Clear Contact paper to lay over the paint….. I worked great.

Sure it may chip scratch or what ever, I figured that if I stayed with off the shelf stuff I could match the paint anytime I needed it.

Original when I bought the car.

Cleaned and re-sprayed

Held up well.

Re-spray of black.

It is all in the prep and the type of Vinyl Dye that you use.

Must have been a lot of prep work doing all of that.. Much more stylish with the black knee bar and console! I'm a bit short on time at the moment so ended up buying a black console in decent shape. Would probably have spent the money on the painting anyway.

Thinking of retrimming my seats sometime in the future as well, but not sure if it's possible to obtain the same seat fabric..
