Clutch Bulkhead Repair Panel - Aluminium?

Post

Hi there,
So i am currently pondering what to do with the clutch hole through the bulkhead.  In the past someone has obviously 'had a go' and whacked a repair panel over the top of the split bulkhead.  No prep behind it, so its rusty underneath, but the repair is solid.

One option would be to buy a repair panel, cut the old one out and replace with a nice clean panel, however everyone i find on the net appears to be aluminium?  Is this right, or are they just galvanised? Does anyone know of where i could get this section in steel instead?

Thanks for any help you can give!

The ones I've used have been galv steel. Just clean up the rust, paint and place on top. They have a self-adhesive backing and when in use the tension of the cable holds it place. Looks like you have good access so you could add a couple of pop rivets/small bolts to make sure it doesn't move.

I thought they would be galvanized (otherwise it would be difficult to do an actual repair) - i am going to cut the whole lot out and replace with the new panel i think, as i am going to repaint the engine bay anyway.

That way i can correct the POs work.

Don't forget the repair plate is also a reinforcing plate to augment the remains of the original. Although I think the gauge of the repair panel greater than the original, if you cut out the old and insert the new you will end up back at square one and have a orifice that will flex and crack just like the original.

I was thinking of joggling the edge of the bulkhead to try and get around the gauge issue.  Not sure if it would stop it occurring again though.
