boot release

Post

hey guys. just wanted to run this past everyone.

i've had the tailgate smoothed on the mk1, but cant think of an easy way to release the boot catch?

i really wanted a manual release mechanism, like a cable that i could pull…but then realised as i was assembling the car that the release catch goes on the boot side rather that the body side.

does anyone have any ideas? i'd prefer not to run a motor.

any ideas would be great thanks.

Dan.

you could somehow run a cable inside the boot lid from the catch which follows the rear washer hose and through where that goes at the top of the boot then down and along to the front or wherever you want it, not sure if that would be possible to do? just an idea so might not be :ocf_emoticons__BangHead:

I odd think of doing this but the when the tailgate goes up the cable will surely have to follow it? This is proving to be a right pain lol

do you mean when you open the tailgate? the cable would run from the catch inside the skins of the tailgate up around and through one of the grommet things where the rear window heater wires and washer hose go through, the cable wouldn't stretch or anything as the distance for it to travel doesn't change as the boot just hinges up, not sure if that's what you meant?

You could use a cable like you would buy for a push bike barke as most bike shops sell it by the metre.  Link the end inside the cab to a bonnet pull handle, petrol flap lever(say off a Fabia or Fiesta) feed the cable through the grommets into the tailgate and down to the latch.  there should be someway you can attach to the boot button rod.

I think I've been thinking about this all wrong lol I was going to run a cable from just behind the seats straight to tailgate. There's an obvious flaw to my idea lol

Thanks for the help guys. I really should have sorted this problem before I installed the new headlining 🙈🙈
O well. Hopefully learn from my mistakes.
Cheers guys.

ah man that's annoying about the new headlining :P

I reckon it's possible though, especially with the push bike cable and handle/lever as cbdubs said,
you'd probably want to use a protective cover for the cable if it didn't come with it already (bike shops probably have it by the metre like the cable) like this:
http://www.rockshore.uk.com/bicycle-teflon-brake-cable-coversleeve-25m-long-8633-p.asp

and as long as the protective cover is fixed at each end so can't move, the cable would slide easily within it
