My Mk1 GTI soft top has body coloured bumpers and the trims around the wheel arches. Do you know if this was an original option or would it have been done my an owner in the past? Some seem to have it and others don't.

It looks like it's been added.
The Big bumper kit or proper title for a post 1988 cabby is the "face lift" model. VW updated the origional small bumpered model as they didn't want to make a MK2 Cabriolet so they just added the new bumpers, side cill covers and the wheel arch covers to freshen up the look.

Yours being an 86 model would have had the small bumpers and no kit.

People often call this the "clipper Kit" which is a misnomer as the kit was fitted to GTI Cabriolets also.
The "Clipper" model being the base range of the Cabriolet models.

Hi, I think you might be referring to actual plastic bumpers painted rather than a clipper bodykit .  For 86- 87 model year cars and some 88 ones that were built when there was an initial shortage of bodykits, they did come with the original black bumpers and wheel arches colour coded.  Normal referee to as Quartet Editions, came in

Paprika  Red with choice of Red or dove grey Roof and red or grey interior.

Alpine White with either red or blue interior and red or blue roof - possibly white as well.

Helious Blue with dove grey or blue interior and then choice of blue or grey roof

Sapphire metallic (light silver/blue) with grey or blue interior and grey or blue roof.

Scala allots were fitted which were body coloured on the Red And white cars.

There were a few unusual presumably factory special order models for example I have seen a Sapphire car with grey Seats and a red roof.

At the same time VW did regular GTI models with black bumpers and wheel arches, but to be honest not seen many of those about .
