Head light popped off bracket
Hi,
The head light on my 84 Mk1 GTI popped off round the frame yesterday, looks like the round rubber piece is perished. Anyone know where I can get replacement rubber seal, what type of glue I should use to glue it all back together?
Thanks,
John

Are you talking about the inner light on a quad grille, or the outer?
Pics work well to show the issues.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Thanks for the reply, just added images.
It's the outer larger main headlight..
It appears to have a specially fitted rubber seal, which assume glues back on to the round frame around the light.
I'm new to the forum, also wondering if I posted this in the right area?
Thanks again,
John

Remove all old stuff and clean all up.Just use good quality silicon, it works perfectly. Put it all around inner parts edge making sure its good all around especially on the top to keep water out, then line up headlight and push on. Tape in place with masking while it dries. Same happened to me with mk2 recently.

They Glue Aquariums together with clear RTV you can too. Give it s good 24 hours to cure or dry. Then run a bead of it around the outside to fill any voids in the sealant so water can't ingress.
Just be careful not to get any on the reflector. Or OOzY out towards the inside Clean smooth both edges, and apply a smaller diameter hole. Squeeze from the bottom of the tube as you get a better consistent flow from the tip.

I did the same repair earlier this year and used tiger seal to bond them back together. I put a bead around where I thought it should go and put the lens in place and then removed it to make sure it was sealing all the way round and applied more if needed. Then I pressed them together but I found that after 24 hours the sealer still felt slightly soft so I would recommend at least 48 hours.
Mars red 1.8 GTI tintop now MOT'd and on the road!
