POWER ASSISTED STEERING? Help thoughts and ideas please !

First off I'm not very good at this forum malarkey so bare with me! lol. So, I've got a 2.0l abf conversion underway, all the wiring is 90% there except a few odds and ends, the exhaust has been modified to miss the usual spots and is away being welded. I bought the car pretty much all mocked up however some mods were done completely wrong. I'm toying with the idea of fitting power steering and its the next part I've come to, so I've purchased a second hand mk2 PAS rack (in the post) I need your input on the task at hand i would like to know:
1:is this a good idea in the first place?
2: can the mk2 rack be modified to suit the car?
3: should i pick up a mk3 PAS pump and bracket for the engine?
4: should i go a completely different route?
ill do my best to keep the post up to date and get some photos on. feel free to shoot me an email or direct message, ill be very appreciative of that! (after all, seems like you lot have a brilliant idea of what your doing)

I thought that there was a difference in the racks for a 2.L over the 2.8 as to where the shifter bracket was mounting.
So I would ask if you are using a mk1 tranny or the 2.0L tranny
Power steering has been on the Cabriolets over here since 85 as standard.
Then would you be driving the pump off of a serp belt or standards vbelt off the crank.

Power steering itself is a good idea, don't think the mk2 golf rack will work, it has a wider track, so unless the extra length is in the steering arms it will give bumpsteer and would need narrowing. Not an easy task I suspect.

Most people seem to go for the easy steer kit from the company MK2 Mania. It's a Corsa B column electric system mated to the Mk! golf Shaft.

1 - 2. nope mk2 rack is very different, you cant use it
3. yeah can use mk3 pas pump setup, need the alternator, pulleys and other associated brackets

Save the money and your time, keep the original and fantastic feel of the steering, power steering will make the car feel disconnected from the road.
Just don't even attempt to turn the steering wheel when stationary without power steering, just try to be moving when turning, once above 20 mph you can turn the steering wheel with just a finger and thumb.
