Distributor for twin carbs mk1 grid 1.6 8v

Post

I'm currently redoing my engine bay in my '82 1.6 gt I (shaving and filling holes, wire tuck etc) so have ditched the mfi and bought twin dellorto 40's. As I no longer have a servo as I've installed a wilwood pedal box, I don't want to use the vaccum advance on the distibutor as it will look untidy, and I heard it isn't needed on twin carbs? So my question is can I use a centrifugal dizzy, or can I keep the standard dizzy or will I have to go for a map pale ecu unit such as megajolt?
Thanks very much for any replies

yours will have the centrifugal weights inside for rpm based advance, so you could try removing the vacuum unit and see how it goes without. any vw dizzy (afaik) you find without the vacuum unit for example the one on a digifant gti will be a basic non-advance unit so to run one of those you need external mappable ignition system otherwise it'll be totally flat with no kind of advance.

I assume the timing will be slightly off as the revs increase as it isn't getting the full advance then? I have also read about people adding weights onto to dizzy to correct the timing on old ford's, I take it this isn't needed for my dizzy as it will be close enough as is? Mappable ignition timing is way out of my league so I don't particularly want to go down that route for now
Thanks!

will probably be fine with a tweak to the dizzy position I recon, it is possible to adjust the weights to suit your purposes but you need to find an old skool tuner to do that for you!

I'll give that a good go first then in a few weeks when the engine should be done  :P I take it there's not many old skool guys like that then, definitely not anywhere near where I am up in the far north of Scotland anyway!

I forgot to mention, will having a high lift cam, port and polished head and cylinder bore to 1.7 make a difference to the advance curve?

Yeah the curve wont be ideal once you start making those modifications, but you might be able to change the advance a bit to get it close.  this si where fully mappable ignition systems come in!
