Simple 20v conversion question?

Post

which doner car?

Hi guys,

going to keep this short and sweet. I have searched but can not seem to get a direct answer and the more I reads the more confused I get.

I am doing a 20v conversion in the next month and I want to buy a doner car to use most parts frpom.

my question is. which 20v car is best to buy to benefit from the most parts I need to use.

I am doing a full dash conversion as well so I can use the looms ect. Will custom fit the dash so that's no worries.

Its either a mk4 golf gti or a ibibza cupra in my eyes.

Can I use the gear box out of either cars?

Simple question I hope lol

Thanks joe

Mk4 Golfs use 02J but the driveshaft cups are wrong for a mk1 as they're 108mm, you need 100m bolt in cups from a late 02A box.  CTN & DPA boxes deffo have the bolt in cups and I think ASD too.  Some of the early mk4 2l 20V NA gearboxes have 100m cups too so i've been told.  And regard which car to go for the one that you're going to be able to use most bits off is a mk4 Golf.  Still a lot of work to convert.  I did a full mk4 loom in mine but with all the mk1 dash and removed everything from the loom that isn't needed.  I reckon it took me 100+hours for the 1st loom I did, you need to be 100% on how to read wiring diagrams.

to be honest i would personally use a later mk4 with a dbw engine, these have wide band ecu's which have slightly more potential than the narrow band ecu's found in the ibizia cupra

audi a3, tt, seat toledo and leon, some skodas too all based on the mk4 golf platform.

ibiza is closer to a mk2 golf, generally the donor car will cost you more too. if you do end up with one its not much better for a mk1 swap really apart from it has 100mm flanges on the box, plus the shifter is slightly better fit. but the good news though if you do get a biza you have a big pile of parts which will sell to mk2 owners for good money. they will have the brembo front brakes too which i believe will fit with the mk1 280mm adaptor brackets you get, but not 100% sure.

if you plan to make your own wiring loom the MK4 based cars are easier to start with, the routing ids a great fit on a mk1 and a lot less work to strip it out as when u remove the ecu looms that all you get. with the biza its a massive lump of wiring that includes everything in the bay so lights, wipers etc. still fine to use when stripped though :)
