Hi folks… This question has probably been asked a million times but i was just looking for some more information about the relocation of the drivers side engine mount for a 1.8 20v into a Mk1 Driver…. Is it easy to do and where exactly does it need moved to?

Thanks in advance!! :)

Hi,

Its fairly easy if you can weld! Basically you need to drill out the 4 spot welds from the middle of the drivers side mount.  Then carefully grind back the upper two welds on the upper legs attaching it to the chassis leg, then grind the two welds holding the lower legs to the chassis leg.

Then you need to flip it 180 degrees so its upside down and hold it in position Further back the chassis leg.  Theres a handy formed grove on the chassis leg to show the position.  The now bottom (that originally were the top) legs need to be lengthened by an inch or so.  This will be seen when you hold it in the new position.   Bend all the Legs to match the contours of the chassis leg.  Then weld in position seaming the legs and puddle welding the spot welds back to the chassis leg.  Remember its pretty important tha they are good welds as it will be holding a few more horses than originally intended!

Heres a pic of it fitted on mine, unfortunatly didnt take pictures of the process.  I welded up the holes left by removing the 4 spot welds in the original position To maintain the strength in the chassis legs

Here you can see where it was removed if you look closely, and the formed groves for both positions

I also put the engine in the bay with the conversion mounts to ensure it sat right!

Thanks a lot for the info mate… I actually managed to speak to CrazyQuiffs earlier and he said he can send me a used mount thats still attached to a crossmember so i can see exactly where it goes, it'll be quite handy to see it up close

No probs, all will become clear when you see the mount they send.

Got a build thread for mine.  Enjoyed getting stuck into mine, but going from a driver has a few other mini issues i came accross so good luck :)
