Coilovers advice needed!

Post

Thinking about getting some coilovers as I'm tired of feeling seasick whilst sailing my golf around country lanes however I'm unsure as to what type I should get!
It's a 1.8 8V Mk1 Clipper Cabriolet from 1988 which I would have thought has same set up as Mk2 Golf?
I've seen the ProSport ones on eBay which admittedly are budget and you pay for what you get etc. but actually a lot of people with MK2 Golfs seem to recommend them and I'm not looking to spend more than £200 as saving still for a trip to Le Mans in June.
So my questions are will these fit?
If not what do you reccomend?

Thanks as always,

Save up and buy a good set of shocks and springs.

Don't put cheap coilovers on your mk1…you will ruin it.

if all you have is 200, spend it on shocks and lowering springs. about 40mm is the sweet spot imo

need to spend more money than that on coilovers for them to be any good. cheaper kits fine for slamming etc but not so great for ride and handling

I've just bought a set of APEX RDX adjustable coilovers and a set of SKF top mounts, not fitted them yet but they do look really good quality and they are only a couple of hundred quid more than the cheap JOM's!

MK2 dampers fit. Problem is they are longer so end up increasing the ride height.

If £200 is your upper limit JOM are your best option.

fronts need a spacer as well the mk2 bearign housing is thicker tohan mk1 where the shock goes, the rear shocks are a fair buit longer as well. in short, they dont fit well at all and you should buy mk1 units ;)

I increased my budget and went for Spax RSX.  Don't buy cheap - you will only want to replace them…. Only ok if your looking to slam and loose your spine. I personally wouldn't buy JOM either, had these myself - car feels like its on rails but very uncomfortable imo. Saying that, im sure wheel size and tyres make a significant difference.
