AVY or ABF? ...or even an AFH

Post

Since what was meant to be a bit of weekend tinkering every now and then has turned into a full on winter resto I thought I might start thinking about stockpiling parts for engine conversions and am after a few opinions.

Currently I have the stock 1.3 small block carb engine with four speed gearbox. I'm not looking for evo decimating power or show winning install cleanliness; just something useable that'll be a bit of fun round the country lanes, start each time I turn the key (or at least most of the time) and not cost the earth to complete. I quite like the idea of a 16v as a revvy little unit in a light(ish) car should be a lot of fun.

Was set on the abf route but started recently thinking more about avy engines from polo 6n2 gti's. These seem reasonably priced and easy to source. Also, at a glance, the orientation looks like it might make for an easier and tidier install.

I'm obviously in the process of reading up on both of the installs but just wanted some opinions.

the polo 1.4 and 1.6 16v engines drop in without havign to cut off and move the bracket on the drivers side chassis leg so thats a bonus, but with a 5 speed box attached to it you'll have to make a gearbox bracket using bush part from mk1 and box side from mk2/mk2f polo or whatever.

with the 1.4 this means you can stay under the 1.5 limit for cheaper tax, which is nice ;)

I must admit, an AFH is now looking like a promising option… Running on bike carbs should limit the worst of the fueling/wiring headaches and fitment wise it does look at home in a Mk1 bay.  Should near enough double my current power output too which I would be happy with…  Just have to wait and see what turns up for sale I guess!
