Insurance woes

Post

I had a fare bit of free time today so I went on the hunt for some insurance quotes. Under the impression it would be easier to get insured on my family's fairly resent Micra rather then my own mk1 I started there, but boy was I wrong. The insurance with that at the minute is with swintons so I went into a branch with my step dad to enquire about it,  the current policy I believe is under written by axa but they wouldn't even quote adding me on,  the best they could offer is 10k with me on it on a brand new policy, so walled out of there empty handed.

For pricing my own car, I assumed that I had yet to purchase a 1983 golf GX (1457cc) valued at £2000

I had a check of the board and complied a list of numbers.

Won't quote due to age
Lancaster
Bishops calway
Carol Nash
Rh classic insurance (really polite chap)
Footman James ( did put me through to call connection and they found someone who would quote me)

Quotes
Halfords/autosaint  £4955.68 (black box)
Flux just over £6000 3000 miles

Feel a little disappointed, but hopefully some board member might have some great advice that will get a reasonable price for me :) .

How old are you and how many no claims do you have?

Get a tracker and immobilizer installed that should bring the insurance down.

When i was younger i got insured with tesco, they gave a massive discount because i had a clubcard + i got loads of points on my card too :)

Should of mentioned that I guess :D I'm 17 with zero no claims.  I'll defiantly have a play around with quotes with  a tracker and immobilizer. Tesco would't quote the car for me online and I couldn't find a phone number.

Ouch. Crazy prices. Might be worth not being main driver on the policy.

I called them all direct with the exception of halfords which is my cheapest quote weirdly enough. I'll try and grab one when i'm next in store.

I think your only chance is to get insured as a second driver mate, then get one of your parents to insure it as the primary policy holder. I passed in 1998and i still had to do it that way back then to be able to afford it, and that was on a 1.3 Ford Escort Eclipse LOL

You'd also be better off with a smaller engine for a couple of years until you've built up no claims, a golf GX (1457cc) might not be a speed machine but a 1.1 or 1.3 would be better in the eyes of the insurance companies.

if you do for your own insurance put your mum or dad on the policy it will bring it down

I did, put them both as named drivers as they may occasionally use the car.

Sounds like a good idea, 1.1 will be fine as a first car.

The current policy with AXA won't even give me a quote as an additonal driver, it's not up for renewal for a couple of months. When I was in swintons they quoted £10000 for me as a named driver, can't remember the company but they won't all be as bad.
