will a hydraulic head work on a GF bottom end??

basically whats happend is one of my valve rocker clips has snapped on me today and so i either need a new cam, rockers and clip or i can look at a sort of conversion. I've searched high and low to find a mechanical head and they seem to have all disappeared off the face of the earth so my only other option is a hydro conversion, i've just rebuilt the bottom end so dont really wanna chuck it.

any help would be much appreciated guys!

Cheers

GF mech heads have combustion chambers, Hydro heads do not, they're on the pistons.

Lee, looks like you are in for the nightmare i have just came out of mate. What a stinker these engines are. As the chap above has said the hydraulic heads have ball and crown pistons. And the mechanical heads have combustion chambers. So if you were to do this your pistons would smash your valves.

There isnt much you can do. The best advice i can give you is to ask about on here for a similar engine or slightly faster (polo gt engine) and drop the whole engine in. And then ask about on here for your parts. Try crazy quiffs on monday when they open. I am pretty sure they have a breaking driver in. You may be lucky. GF engines seem to be getting very very rare. And parts to recon the heads are very pricey. I can put you in touch with someone who can get you valves etc. But i aint sure about a cam. If you need any more help mate. Just ask.

cheers for all your replies guys, i've bit the bullet and fitted a 1.3 mk2 polo MH engine now, gonna keep the GF and find the parts i need and i've found a place that do brand new cam kits for them for £110 but the MH will do for now, hopefully will be abit easier with electonic ignition and autochoke lol just gotta get the wiring finished and all should be good :) thanks alot guys

My philosophy is if the head isnt under-skimmed and the casting is ok. Parts can always be sourced. Wether they are standard or performance is another matter. Hows the polo engine doing?

gotta say i'm really impressed with the polo engine! so much more quieter and smoother. also it feels a little more torquey aswell so it's all good :)

my philosophy was the same until it came to finding another mechanical head, i pm'd people, rang others, went to specialists… no one had or could get hold of one…. and with the car being my daily runner i needed it back on the road. i dont think the GF will be going back in purely because of how well the MH runs :)
