Whats the cheapest way of adding bhp to my 1.1 C engine?

The car is a 1983 VW GOLF 1.1 (1,093cc) and as standard has 50bhp, and a 0-60 of 16.9sec. I would like to get more out of it, but by not spending too much, as i only paid ?166 from ebay for the whole car. Any advice would be great!

The cheapest thing to get more performance out of a 1.1 would be to tow it with a GTI
Bert
Failing that drop a 1.3 in!

Thats not a rod knockin, its a diesel stupid! floppy top and 1 tin top

What do you what out of the car! There's only so much you gain out of the 1.1. Cheap would be fitting an universial induction kit (under ?20) which will give you 5hp tops. Best bet would be to chuck in the old 1.3 polo s or go for a polo 1.4 16v conversion. And more power needs better braking.

I have been told that i could fit a Golf mk2 1.6 Driver carb on it and that could give me up to 10 bhp extra, anyone know if this works.

Mm never tryed that one before? Ive got a 1.6 carb which only needs a new rubber base. Pulled it off my 86 cabby (have replaced with a weber). You can have the carb for free, just pay me the cost of postage.

Might give you bore wash leading to a loss of compression too. The cheapest thing you can do is to up the compression to 11:1. After that everything costs money.

Thanks crazycar, if you could find out how much the postage would be that would be great! Can you accept payment through PayPal?

sorry quick and maybe stupid question BUT why would you waste time/effort and money tryin to make a 1.1 quick ?? its not gona happpen no mattter what you do and you can only push it so far til it blows .. sorrry just seems a pointless excersize to be honst

why not save a few quid and go for something along the lines of a polo gt engine ?? (1.3) quick little engines and arent hard to convert so im told  :)

That is a hefty insurance premium mate, seems insane that a car worth ?170 costs almost 10 times to insure.

Anyway, when i got my 1.1 c. It had been averagely well looked after, but there was plenty to do to make it could run to its full potential. Dont forget that yours may only be making 35 of the book figure of 50 horses. Make sure its really well serviced first, then if you still want more power you can consider other options.
Have a look at my blog (in my signiture) for the simple stuff to clean up.

Out of interest, in the ebay ad it said it wouldn't start - what was the problem?

Thanks for the link, and i am getting the car on saturday so i don't know if its going to go (I am going to spray some easy start in it and take it from there), i have a backup car if it doesnt start (1998 VW POLO 1.0L)and i have to tow it back, so i have time to play with it.
