what sort of power can be had with 1.3 on twin 40s

contemplating using an early 1.3 engine as i assume it would be easier to convert to run one of these on twin 40s or bike cabs than running them on a 1.3 injection engine

would i notice much of a difference and what type of power are these standard and what can or has been got out of these in the past

if its a gf its 60bhp std.

The inlet manifold is very restrictive, the exhaust manifold is very restrictive…

i reckon with a good service, twin carbs, 4 branch and a s/s exhuast…80bhp? nobody really tunes these engines so thats a big guess..

"Apparently"(heard it somewhere, Germany I think), with a gas flowed head, 40's, and a decent exhaust, up to 100bhp is available.  How much is done in the way of lightening and balancing on the bottom end, I don't know, and the compression ratio will have to go up as well.

I'll just be happy with more than I have got at the minute, and the awesome noise I will get

well i got my 2 1/4 straight through g40 exhaust with decat which i assume the 1.3 will have the same pattern for the exhaust manifold

could i use my g40 inlet manifold as well

alot of other parts on these engines are the same

im looking for a high revving engine really. something just to rag around a track at some point.

not looking for major power as its never going to match the 230bhp i had in the g40

There is a Berg Cup category for 1300cc engines - have a read of this thread on Club GTI for some ideas…

cool

i heard somewhere before that certain old vw heads in the 1300cc had solid lifters as standard. if so what were these out of.

does anyone know if my bits will bolt on ok

According to what I read on CGTI, I think you need a 1.3 head from a Mk3 Golf - this has solid lifters and is apparently your easiest and cheapest route to a high revving 1.3.

You can also use a 16v head (I assume from a later Polo) although I'm not sure whether this has solid lifters or not. It's more suitable in terms of airflow for a high-revving engine though.

I'm doing some more reading around as I'm considering this route for my 76 - Club GTI seems to be a really good source of info…

will a 16v head fit straight on though. what modifications if any are needed to fit one of these.
been meaning to ask this as its an option.

i always thought a mk1 driver engine had the solid lifters. my bad haha
