Is 10W 40 too thin?
Nope, its fine too. 0W40, 5W40, 10W40 and 15W40 are all the same thickness once its warmed up. When cold, 0W40 is thicker than 15W40 when its warm. The viscosity is an arbritary scale, not an actual measure of thickness.

Perfectly acceptable. Bought some Castrol SLX Professional to top up recently (dealer used it) and noted that the oil is VW 505.01 approved, but also for use in BMW and Mercedes-Benz petrol engines.paul_c said
Yep, the diesel oil is fine in the petrol, it has an API SL/CF quality rating and is in the correct vistosity range. Also its the cheapest around (I think). If anyone knows of any cheaper oil, feel free to post up.
Speaking of that oil - would 5W30 be too thin, or can I safely use that? Could always switch over to 5W40 at the next oil change.
