I think you've already got the 'best' small-block. I'm with Scouse, if you want a high-power Golf, seek out a GTI.

Its not so much the hassle, but consider this:

1. You'll end up with a car possibly with 90-100bhp. You can buy a GTI with 112bhp.
2. Compared to the GTI, there are few/no bolt on parts to assist with the conversion, for example you will be into having manifolds and exhaust custom-fabricated. So there's ?800-1000 of your budget gone already, for a 90bhp car.
3. There are few tuned small block cars, compared to big block. So there are very few others who will have done similar to you, to be able to offer help if you get stuck.

I weighed this up when I was looking at an engine conversion. I was initially going to do a VR6, but changed my mind and went for 2l 16V.

You can either weld in some big-block mounts and go for a big block engine (1.6, 1.8 16v, or 2.0 16v are probably the best), or stick with the mounts and tune a small-block instead. As Paul says, a big-block will be easier to get parts for, and will probably work out cheaper in the long run.

I've done a bit of research into tuning small-blocks, and found that the biggest engine you can slot straight in is a 1.6 from a Mk3 Polo onwards.

They come with injection as standard, but also ECUs and in some cases variable valve timing (Polo and Lupo GTi engines). If you want to stick with injection then a donor polo with a 1.6 will definitely be a good idea.

I thought about just getting the engine and using custom injection (megasquirt or similar) but the hassle and cost involved put me off, so I'm going to go for carbs instead, and I'll avoid the 1.6 engines with VVT.

If you do choose a small-block from a later Polo or similar you'll also need the gearbox and cable-change linkage.

Or you could stick the 1272cc G40 engine in and tune that to have up to 200Bhp on tap.

1341cc overbore
Eaton M45 Superharger
Smaller pulley and toothed belts
PSD Intercooler
De-cat and freeflow exhaust
Remap

That with a bit of headwork, a chunky cam and some bottom end balancing and lightening should produce a bit of a weapon.  You can always add a Helix paddle clutch and Quaife LSD afterwards if traction is your problem and the Eaton M45 charger has its own dedicated oil supply which is much more reliable than the G-lader. This in my oppinion is the most easily tuneable small block. However this route would be quite expensive compared to buying a big block golf and putting a 2.0 16V/G60 etc in it though.

Swings and roundabouts at the end of the day.

if you've already done a lot of work to your 1.1 / 1.3 you may as well keep hold of it…..if you buy a GTI you may end up doing all the jobs that you've already done to your 1.1 / 1.3

you can get a running MOT failure Polo GT (or an NZ lower model) for less than ?200

Yeha on here has injection on his mk1 (small block)

me and my brother need to go down and see how he's done it…….only 6 wires of the polo engine loom need spliceing into the golf loom apparently

GT would be a good conversion……i've got a polo GT and it goes really well

my brothers got all the bits to do a NZ (low comp GT)……the motor in my brothers Polo is NZ and is not much slower than my GT, but he has fitted a GT cam to it, as well as de-cat, single box powerflow exhaust and a K&N filter

only other thing you need is to fabricate a gearbox mount for the 5 speed box as the way the mount fastens to the box is different on the 5 speed box

also……

a 1.3 with a GTI engine in it will cost the same to insure as a GTI (group 14)

a 1.3 with a Polo GT motor in it will cost the same as a Polo GT (group 8….same as a 1.3 driver) maybe less

cheers paul, thinking about going for a gti. But not ruling out a engine change to my golf:)

I you can find a whole, complete Mk3 Polo GT as a donar car that gives you everything you need and it's a simple bolt in conversion.

You can use the manifolding off the GT, management, etc, etc, etc.  All you'd need to find would be a GTI fuel pump to give you plenty of pressure at the back of your injectors and probably GTI brakes might be a good idea too!

It'd use the 4-speed Mk1 Golf gearbox but you can fabricate a gearbox top mount for the 5-speed Polo 'box if you've got a bit of time to spare.

I did a GT 3F engine into a Mk1 Golf 1300 Driver in a day and a half from drive onto driveway running to drive off driveway running.

another option people seem to have forgotten is the polo 6n 1.6 8v engine, this is still a small block and when used with polo gt injection and a few sensible mods over 100 bhp is easy and the torque delivery of these little engines are superb.

polo/lupo 1.4 16v is another option 100 bhp std, so pleanty of potential there too.

the seat terra derv van has a 1.4 engine which can be used to obtain larger capacity on gt and g40 engines
there is loads of stuff you can do to these little engines, so they arent as pointless as some people may think!
there was a mk2 golf featured in PVW magazine a few years ago running a 1300 small block with about 120bhp and a 10k rev limit
