what engine options straight swap

Hi guys, been out of the mk1 game for a year or so now, but as my bug isnt a good daily im thinking of puttin my mk1 back on the road.

i took it off the road about 2yrs ago when the engine fell out (stupid low gearbox mount lol)

anyway, i no longer have the engine or gearbox or driveshafts.

what options have i got that will go straight in, dont wana mess around with the loom or mounts unless its an easy loom modification. its not that i cant, its just i would rather chuck an engine in and drive it!

ive heard people say mk3polo engines or mk2 golf engines but which ones drop straight in?

it was originally a 1.3 4speed

cheers for your help :) :)

We should start up a FAQ on this, is becoming a very common Q. ! :)

Right, bolt in swaps.

1.1, 1.3 solid lifter engine from an early mk1, mk2 golf or mk1 or mk2 polo
1.1, 1.3 hydraulic lifter engine from a later mk2 polo or mk2 golf
1.1, 1.3 hydraulic lifter engine from a later mk3 polo with fuel injection.
1.3 hydraulic lifter engine from a mk3 polo gt
1.3 hydraulic lifet engine from a polo G40

You can also use the later mk4 polo engines, the 1.3, the 1.4 and the 1.6. ( with the added complication of electronic fuel injection/etc - you can always use a carb and dizzy off an earlier polo to get you running.

With the exception of the very early solid lifter stuff, you WILL have to do some wiring , as the hydraulic lifter lumps have electronic ignition.

Also with the fuel injection lumps you'll have to sort out the fuel lines and pump for the injection system.

Gearbox's - any four speed cable clutch rod change box from any of the above vehicles will fit, for the 5 speed you'll need to make/bodge up a mount for the right hand side of the box as they are different.

So, get down the breakers yard - find a mk1 golf ( haha ) mk2 polo, or mk2 golf…..if you want the easiest option.

I'm personally building a hydraulic lifter 1.3 with bike carbs, GT cam, ashley exhaust and megajolt mappable ignition, with a mk2 polo 5 speed box - lovely. :D

ABD lumnp from early mk3 golf and seat ibiza is also direct drop in, virtually identical engine to mk2 golfy hydro lifter type engine. you'll need to change the cam for a carby 1.3 one for hydro tappet engine as 1.4+ have no lobe for mechanical fuel pump. also same is true for any mk3 polo lump too

change dizzy for a vac advance one from mk2 golf/polo carby and fit all mk2 golf/polo carby setup and no real wiring of any decription is required.

5 speed swap isnt bolt in tho im afraid, need to weld haf polo 5 speed box mount to half mk1 golfy one
