vw 1.3 oil coming up from the breather????

Hi all

I have a golf 1.3 carb and the other day I was changing the plugs and noticed oil from the intake and when I opened it oil can pouring out and the air filter was socked in oil. When the car is idling there is no oil coming out of the breather but after I have driven the car oil starts dripping from the intake onto the exhaust manifold and starts to smoke. The oil level is fine, water level is fine no oil in the water, starts easy.I have a suspicion it might be the PCV valve and I am no expert but I can't seem to find it,any help will be appreciated.

hi there, the chances are that its back pressure thats causing this. basically i think the piston rings are just a bit tired and the gasses are getting into the sump. normal on high mileage engines, but if its actually blocking up your air filter it must be quite bad. new piston rings might be an idea but im no expert so you'd better wait for a second opinion too. good luck. Hi TUGG1

Thank for the reply.I let the car idle for awhile an what I noticed is when it idles nothing happens but when I let the engine idle on higher rpm's then after awhile oil starts spitting out the breather. Thanks for your opinion.

I agree there is a possibility of wear in the rings and back pressure causing this but there could be a simplier reason. The breather oil hole return to the sump is blocked. Remove the breather (replace it with one from GSF, ask for the one with no lip) - put your finger into the breather hole and make sure the oil return hole is not blocked, if it is (and it probably will be) use a heavy welding rod or similar to clear, then refit the new breather & pipe. Good luck

Hi Cero

I was looking at the breather hole and it looked dirty is there anything I can use to clean the oil return hole with the welding rod,I will look for a the same breather at a parts shop.(I live in south Africa)

The reason I said go for the GSF version is they have the lip already ground off, they are a complete so-&-so to replace as you cannot get any access with the lip still on. An alternative is you run it round a grinder yourself. As regards the breather hole really it's just a case of trying to clear it as best as possible, maybe try some carb or brake cleaner in there first - you'll be surprised how big the hole will be once you get it cleaned out

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but I'm having this same problem of oil in the air box from the breather pipe on my 1.3 carb south african "citi" golf. Only I'm confused because lots of info talks about the pcv valve or the oil return breather being blocked, neither of which I can find! I can only find one breather pipe from the rocker cover to the airbox? Is it just a different design? Or am I being dumb?

This is what I did and it worked, thank of your valve cover and look underneath you will see where the air goes up into the breather hose there is a dome like plate, here is what I did,the easier way is to go is buy a new valve cover but I was pressed for time so I took a blow torch and removed the plate, inside is thick layers of mess take it out and clean it til you can see through most of the holes make sure you clean it properly,I used petrol and wire to poke the holes open and then put the mess back and I brazed the plate shut. You can not believe how dirty the mess was and that solved my problem no oil sins. What I think is happening is as air pushes up to escape through the breather little drops of oil go's with and start to collect on top of the mess because it cant drip back down because the mess is blocked it gathers and as soon as enough air try's to escape it starts spitting oil as the air escapes(I took took my breather hose of and let it idle on high rpm's for a while and noticed that was happening). If you need any help please feel free to ask and I will answer to the best of my ability.

Thanks Loom, that makes a lot of sense now, sounds like I have the same problem.
