Terrible MPG and crunchy gears!

Been having a few issues with my poor old formel e. Firstly, I filled up with petrol last week and it only managed 160 ish miles on a full tank. I know its an old car, but thats 20 miles to the gallon! I'm thinking the carb might need to be looked at but im no mechanic..

Also, i've searched around and it seems people are having a similar problem. After driving around for about 30 mins, it becomes nearly impossible to select gears! Im under the impression that the gear linkage bushes need replacing? Furthermore, once this problem reaches critical level (cant select anything) if put it in reverse with the clutch down the car will creep backwards..

Any advise would be great, I hate not being able to enjoy her

1. Get the carb checked/engine tuned. You'll need to be able to check ignition timing and gas mixture, so unless you have the relevant tools, its a garage job.

2. Sounds like clutch dragging - adjust clutch cable

No it isn't! it's worse than that. Golfs have a 10 gallon (45.4 litre) tank - 16mpg.

ouch!
