Taking out a mk3 gt engine to fit into mk1 golf (4 speed)

Hi,

Im going to be buying a GT engine out of a mk3 polo, and can have pretty much everything i want.

What do i need,

ENGINE, GEARBOX obviously,

1. how far into the car does a loom go, how much should i get
2. are the driveshafts going to fit onto mk1 golf
3. What about the 5 speed conversion? what should i take
4. Manifold and down pipe i will get
5. Speedo, acc and clutch cable
6. Engine mounts
7. Clocks
8. ECU
9. Fuel Pump

Is there anything i am forgetting.

Cheers,

Dom

Search on my username and the word polo. There's plenty of threads to read.

sweet cheers dude, once im doing this conversion i think ima going to be posting allllot more often.

Couple of questions though?

What do i coolant system wise, use which rad? does it not really matter?

Fuel system? what do i do, can i get away with a facet fuel pump, because i have just replaced my fuel tank with standard item for mot so dont really want to do it again.

Can you think of what else i will need to get off the gt at all?

Re: Taking out a mk3 gt engine to fit into mk1 golf (4 speed

1. how far into the car does a loom go, how much should i get

You can run this converstion on a carb (or two, or four) and if you go that route, just use the dizzy, loom, amp and coil pack from a late Mk2 Polo/MK2 Golf 1.3.  If you go this route, use the Mk1 Golf loom up until the coil and join the new loom there.

2. are the driveshafts going to fit onto mk1 golf

Use the Golfs driveshafts

3. What about the 5 speed conversion? what should i take

I personally wouldn't bother, just use the Mk1 4-speed box.  You can convert to 5-speed but you'll need to fabricate and weld up your own gearbox top mount.

4. Manifold and down pipe i will get

Use the Mk1 Golf manifold onto a pre-1979 VW Derby front pipe.  Or, if money is no object, I believe Ashley do a 4-1 tubular manifold for this engine.

5. Speedo, acc and clutch cable
All the existing Mk1 Golf stuff.  Use the Mk1 alternator and starter too.

6. Engine mounts

Mounts off your old engine will bolt into the 3F block.

7. Clocks

Isn't this the same as point 5?  The only headache is the wiring for the temperature guage, everything else is plug and play from the Mk1 Golf loom.

8. ECU

If you are going carb(s), there is no need.  Note if you run ECU-less, you can't run the GT dizzy as it has no mechanical advance cure, hence finding one off a late Mk2 Polo.

9. Fuel Pump

On carbs, you want a Facet electric pump and, depending on what carb setup you use, a pressure regulator, I've got a Filter King one on mine.

Is there anything i am forgetting.

Brakes!!!  Use Mk2 Scirocco calipers and carriers as they are cheap and easy to come by.  This will let you run Mk1 Golf GTI 239mm vented discs and pads.

Use the Polo GT rad with the fan and cowling off the Mk1 Golf.  Use a "round" expansion tank (like Mk2 GTI, etc - loads of VW's run them) and use top and bottom hoses from a Mk4 Polo (but you'll have to cut them appart as they are bonded together on the Mk4 by two little bits of rubber but you need to change the angles they sit at.)

If money is a concern, use a Mk2 Polo inlet manifold with an adaptor plate and a Weber DMTL 32/34 carb.  If money is no object, twin Weber DCOE 40's jetted to 170ish air correctors and 120ish mains on 4.5 venturies chokes to 30mm.

Fuel pump wise, if you are going the carb route, Facet is more than perfect for this application.

wow! nice one.

I am planning on using the injection, What will this affect, fuel system, looms etc (anything of the above it will affect)

Cheers dude

Yes, quite a bit.  If you are using the injection system, you'll need to take the front loom from the Polo that goes back to the ECU.  You'll also need to take the ECU.

The Mk1 Golf GTI ran a BOSCH fuel pump under the car but I'm not sure if this will provide enough fuel pressure to the fuel rail on the Polo injection setup.  If not, you'll need to change the fuel tank for one from a late Mk1 Cabriolet GTI as these have a lift pump in the top of the tank.

You'll also need to wire up relays for the fuel pump(s).

In order to use the ECU you [may] need to install the lambda probe in the exhaust.  You can either try and use the Polo front pipe but the catalytic converter may cause clearance issues or alternatively, you can buy a bolt that's the same thread as the lambda probe and weld that into your front pipe somewhere.

Keeping the car on injection means alot more work, as does retaining the 5-speed gearbox.  However, for reliability and "modern car" feel, it's the best way to go.

right ive just done this conversion into my mk1 and ive done most of the stuff but the thing im confused on is the polo distrubuter as its an electric one and my 1300 had the machanical with points one so how do i get a spark for the polo one

im running carbs by the way and dont have any part of the polo loom so im stuck at this time i have my mot on friday!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

edit. and which dizzy shal i use the golf one or the polo one. ovbs i'll be useing the polo leads and golf coil.

Steve! more help please….. Im trying to gather up the bits i need before i start doing this, think im gonna save some moneys and get an ashley 4-2-1 mani, i had one on the polo i had and got an engineering company to weld a lamba nut on it, so exhaust sorted, Will sort out coolant hoses etc soon, The only thing which is worrying me is the wiring, which part of the loom actually need to be joined to the golf loom? How hard is it, is there any wiring diagrams or pictures out there?

Final thing what fuel pump should i use, how much ish, and where can i get one from?, (not keen on changing tank as i had to change it to a standard one for the mot)

Cheers,

Dom

Hi dubdom, I did this conv last year and I love it. Still got the 4 speed 1.1 engine in and it canes up to about 70 then feels like you're redlining it (still haven't got the rev-counter wired in…)

I used all the fuel pump gear from the polo, get 2 inline filters for the engine bay end,(1 flow, 1 return) and make sure the filters have 'bulb's at either end for the jubilee clips from yr fuel pipe to clamp against, (I had non-bulbous ends and it kept blowing the filters off the pipe from pressure) the lift pump from the tank of the polo fits straight inot the golf fuel tank. The polo fuel system is complicated, with about 7 ends to join to make up the circuit, but I got an exploded diagram from here, and It's fine. I made a mount for the main pump and filter and located it to the right of the wheel well as u look at the back of the car. I used all the components from the polo engine, It works fine. If u need any pics or info, hit me up, I'm in the shed each evening this week. Good luck bro, all the best.

so just literally everything fuel delivery wise from the polo? never thought of doing that. so the lift pump fits with the same bayonnet type fixing in golf? will i be able to fit it without removing the tank.

just basically doing the research and trying tofigure out how stuf is going to work, pic of the main pump and filter would be great though.

i used the polo coil, it fits exactly where the old golf 1.1 coil was, I don't get why steve thinks a 4 speed is better than 5? my 1.1 4 speed screams at 70mph, there must be a reason tho……

good luck bro.
