Taking a while to turn over?

Post

Im not sure if its the same for everyone? but when I go to start my car it has to crank over for a few seconds and it needs a lot of throttle pumping to get it to go and it doesnt really run well until i have revved it over a certain rpm and it will be fine. It has always done this so I kind of assumed it was normal but I dont think it is because I know someone with a 8-'s merc which is carb'ed but he doesnt have the same starting issues as me! Also on a slightly related note, I cleaned up my battery terminals to try and give them a better connection and noticed the +ve terminal is broken but I cant find anywhere that sells oem battery terminals :(

Any help appreciated!

Cheers,
Matt

mine does the same mate, although i have noticed it taking slightly longer recently.

I generally have to turn the key a couple times and then keep her going with some revs. As soon as i actually put it into gear and drive it its fine (literally the smallest distance just out of my garage). I do notice it is slightly sluggish until warmed up a bit too?

I have always just taken it as being an old car.

Ahh well I'm glad you've said that, mine is exactly the same,
But I'm sure back in 1983 when my car was purchased the owner didn't pick her car up from the dealer and have to faf about as much as I do to start their brand new car   but maybe its just time and the 177k miles which is making it like this!

Mine did this. Doesn't anymore. Efi FTW ;)

I saw it as a nice security feature  asked my girlfriend to start it and she couldn't, she was like, right you do something with the choke thingy, and.. Hmmmm  :ninja:

If the car is running lumpy when first started and clears when you give it a rev it because to much fuel has been pumped in and the engine is flooded with fuel. Which carb are you running? Have you tried having the car tuned but before that check/replace the spark plugs, HT leads, rotor arm, dissy cap, air filter and then get it tuned.

Well I thought that but the car won't actually start unless I hold my foot fully down on the throttle sometines ,

Yes the car has been tunes by a local guy with a rolling road, I've noticed its taking longer since I out my points in after the electronic ignition module broke  I've never actually changed the ht leads so that is top of my list but everything is new other than that

Might well be barking up the wrong tree here.
But if you have to put your foot to the floor in order to start it then that's sounds like basic fuel starvation!

Call me Mr. Thickie but I'm not sure the HT lead is playing any part in that as such, although it's a good idea to replace it!

Full service on the Carb maybe and what about possible air leak and fuel pump issues?  :ocf_emoticons__dontknow:

I sold them new back in 1983 and no you didn't have to floor it to start them.

Well its not always needed, if its cold and I put the choke on, it sometimes starts almost instantly but when its warm it won't start with a bit of choke but I will need to give it some throttle. Couple the bad starting with the starter motor making horrible noises when it disengages makes for a very embarrassing startup!!  :$

No i agree but its been on my list for ages!

I've got three fuel pumps, all of which perform the same and two are brand new, also it had a complete strip down last year and had new gaskets but recently it did eat its own o-ring on the mixture screw which caused idling issues but that's all sorted now

I'll take some videos to demonstrate my issue

Mine likes half way, i have played with the timing which did change it and it would start better, just picked up a timing gun to set it up right, see what its like then.

It always is harder to start when people are watching me lol

still standard carb and points setup

well I picked up a volvo 340 the other day which is a 1.4 carb with 27k miles on it and that has electronic ignition, a mechanical fuel pump and a choke but starts on the key really well, so im guessing the electronic ignition has a lot to do with it but also pierburg carbs seem to be a bit pants!

The accuspark kit made startup a fair bit better and my economy was better but I cant say their reliability is great because i fiddled a bit with it and it seemed to give a really retarded timing for no apparent reason  :P
