Depends how far you want to go and when it was last serviced and what was done? If you don't know when it was last done worth replacing the thermostat, points and condensor (if it has them). All these parts are only a couple of quid each and could well save you hassle in the future. If you so the thermostat you will should renew the antifreeze/coolant as well.

Cheers, i don't know what when it was done last!

when you mention the points and condensor, what are these?

I'll have to get a themostat as it's a SA import so it could still have the SA thermostat!

Also as it's a 1996 SA import, shall i take it i can say it's a 1984 model, to save confusion at GSF?

Yes i am tying to get hold of the SA haynes manual, not so easy :)

I have practically renewed my KR engine on my MK2, but have never dabbled with a carb, backwards i know!

Care to tell me what they are, so i can learn before i get the manual please?

The condensor is a little metal cylinder fitted to the side of the distributor with a wire running into the distributor connecting to the points. The points (also called contact breakers) are fitted inside the distributor under the metal plate the rotor arm sits over. Never quite understood them, but the contact breakers help regulate HT voltage from the coil and the condensor reduces arcing between points. Both of these parts wear, are service items and cause numerous running staring probelms when worn out.

I assumed you had an early 80's 1.3 mk1. Unlikey your car will have them as points and condensors were phased out in the early/mid eighties in favour of more reliable electronic ignition.

Thanks markwon, understand now! Here are some pics of the engine:

**images don't seem to be showing - you can copy and paste into a new window to view**

Does it look like the later type?

Thanks again

Hard to see in the pics to be honest. Looks like it could be electronic (i.e no points/condensor) as appears to be a hall sender and wiring visable in one picture. Condensor should be a small metal barrel attached to side of the distributor below the ditributor cap.

Yes good point - I missed that  . Look like a big block engine (engine is canted back). Traditionally 1.1/1.3 VW engines are canted forward. What is the full cc rating?

The engine number is normally found at the top of the engine block - below the 3rd spark plug from memory.

Its probably covered in oil and dirt so you'l have to clean that area to find it.

The engine code will the first two letters of that number.
