Screen wash bottle and connection on my 1.3 citi golf

Basically (from previous owner) the rear wash bottle has been removed and replaced the fron one and there is a cable running the length of the car from the rear connection to the bottle in the engine bay, so to squirt thr front windows i have to push forward on the stalk!

i would like to get this back to normal, where can i get a new front bottle and motor from and how do i trace the wires from the stalk to make it work again?

many thanks

right im home now and got me haynes - just need to understand a few things first - so the previous owner removed the rear bottle and pump and put it in the front? i asume there is no wires in the engine bay now which would have originally been there for the front bottle, but infact the only wire is the one which runs from the rear pump connection?

as standard the front bottle was wired (as you rightly said) to the pull operation on the right hand stalk and the rear bottle was operated with a push.

if the original wiring for the front bottle has been removed then for you to get it back to normal it requires this wiring to be replaced.

am i right or am i missing something…..

if im right il look at the haynes and tell you how to wire

Right then, there was 2 wires that was tapped up and push down the side - gree and red from what i could see - this must be the wiring for it. I wonder why they did not just use this wire instead of running 2 wires all the way from the rear connection to the front?

:D  that was my thought - i thought that they must have removed the wires as they would have used them otherwise

right we need to check that they are the right ones - you could simply put them on your pump and try it but i would recomend a more scientific method…. easiest way is with a volt meter set to read 12volts ( maybe 0-20volt ) put it in series with the 2 wires you have found - switch the car to ignition live and try pulling on the right hand stalk - if this creates and voltage reading you have cracked it….

if you havent got a volt meter but you have a circuit tester ( dont know proper name but looks like a screw driver with a wire out of the handle and a buld in middle of the see through handle ) then clip the to 1 connector and probe the other with the driver head side and try the stalk again - hopefully the light bulb will come on…..

have you either of these?

Sorry for the late reply, yes i have a multi meter, i'll test this tomorrow lunch time, weather permitting!

I'll keep you updated!

just though in my speed to reply i didnt instruct you very safely with using the voltmeter - you should conect the ride live wire from meter to 1 of the wires and the black meter wire to an earthed point on the body or engine ( not the battery though ) - then pull the right hand stalk to see if there is current and also do this with the other wire - hopefully 1 is earth and 1 is live

this is incase they are both live or not even related to the same circuit - you dont want to short out any circuits.

maybe over causious but it is the best way -

keep me posted.

hope this helps

Thanks, pretty handy with a multi meter, but still good advice to follow!

one job done, those wires were for the front, just connected them back up and it works as it should!

Thanks for the pre advice on this!

Nope i know what you mean - that's a first for me :)

Many years ago before the internet, i change the entire fuel system on a mk2 digi gti, only to find out that the problem was the pump in the tank, which i never new existed!  :banghead:
