Running hot

hi…..

can anyone possibly shed some light on a slight problem we have.

my sons 1.3 driver seems to be running very hot. is this normal.

the guage goes up to 3/4

the flow and return hoses are both hot as is the heater matrix, suggesting the pump is working.

are we worrying about nothing……

cheers guys

flush teh coolent system
and put a new thermosta in there

teh gauge should run 1/2 way
and teh fan should cut in soon as the gauge needle passes the right side of the LED light in teh gauge :D

How to do a coolant flush

1. make sure the engine is completely COLD and put the heaters in the HOT possion

2. Take off rad cap

3. Disconnect bottom water hose from rad

4. Allow to drain into a tub so the water can be disposed of properly

5. Disconnect top hose from rad

6. Run the garden hose threw the rad till water runs clean

7. Take out thermostat and run garden hose threw until bottom hose runs clean. ( some times if you block/hold the bottom hose so the engine fills up with water and then allow to drain, helps clean it out  )

8. Disconnect both hoses that go to the heater matrix, run garden hose till it runs clean (you might want to direct the other loose hose into a tub or something so you don't flood your engine bay with water)

9. Reassemble, not forgetting to put in new water stat

10. Fill with water / antifreeze slowly threw rad (a squeeze of both top and bottom rad hoses helps push out air) allow to settle.

11 fire up engine, with rad cap off, top up as needed, make sure the heaters in the HOT possion. Replace rad cap after about 3 mins of running. Continue to squeeze top and bottom rad hoses to help rease air (you will know when the system is free of air, when the heaters in the car blow hor air) after about 5 mins if the temp gauge or fans heaters are not hot you might not have enough water in the system. So allow to cool and check.

12 KEEP AN EYE ON THE TEMP GAUGE is you haven't put enough water in you can over heat the engine

13. Allow to cool, check water level, top up if needed!

This IS A GUIDE AND DO NOT TAKE ANY RESPONCABILITY FOR BROEN PARTS. OVERHEATED ENGINE OR BURNT BODY PARTS

does this only happen at motorway speeds? if so mine does this also and seems to be fairly common prob because of the 4 speed box so running at high revs for long periods of time gets the engine quite hot.

If the car doesn't seem to be all that hot I would try a new sensor, I had the same trouble and its all that was wrong with mine.

3/4 up the gauge is fine as long as the fan kicks in and it starts colling down before red light flashe.

Mine (1.3 CL) for the 1st time has started to run hot to the extent that the red light flashes when the 3/4 mark is reached (for a minute), and then the fan kicks in and engine cools - makes nervous viewing!

Radiator and hoses are new as is heater matrix.

only happens when in traffic for a while

oh dear.

I'd book it in a garage before you harm yourself mate.

I wish I'd got here earlier when asked how to flush the engine, I'd of started mine off with

1. find a toilet with a large door….

This happened to my 1300 driver too

temp guage was running hot for a couple of days, firstly i put it down to being a really hot day and being stuck in the 5o'clock rush hour but after going for a drive one cool summers evening with no traffic i experienced the same fault, high on guage the light flashing and fan on and off all the time. Driving my Golf to work the next day it overheated, i topped up the cooling system up and crawled to work. thinking the problem must be to do with the thermost i removed it from its housing, taking a close look at the thermostat i could see it had leaked out its wax and thus causing it to not open. a new thermostat cured it and cost me about ?3… Result… :D
