runing problems with 1.1 golf

Hi there
I have a mk1 golf 1.1 i am having runing problems it will run for so long and then it cuts out with no warning and if i leave for a little bit it starts again

I have changed carb,fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, ht leads, points, rotor arm, dizzy cap, recon dizzy, i have had it tuned three times

If someone could throw some light on it would be great

i have checked the fuel pump and i have put three new pumps on and its still the same

i had same problem on my caddy pickup and a mk 1 golf one had rust and grit in the tank the other had water and a dead bumble bee that had broken up into little parts and bloked the pickup filter.
My sop (standard operating procedure) with mk1s is clean the tank out or buy a new one at the same time do the filler neck then blow out the pipes with air line.
