Restore/Rebore a 1.3 GF engine?

Post

Does this sound right?

Hi, I have a 1.3 GF engine that I would like to be overhauled and painted up so it runs and looks as good as new! I popped into my local auto engineering shop, called Spot auto engineering in Derby, and asked what they would do for me. He said that he is happy to do it all but if I wanted it sprayed up and looking like new then he would have to rebore the engine by .5 ?! If I just had a ring change staying the standard size then he wouldn't bother spraying it? I thought this was very odd! I'm not really looking to get it rebored but would this be a good option? He hasn't quoted me for the work yet but should call me early next week with (hopefully) a reasonable price.
Should I try another engine refurb company or should I have a bash at stripping it myself and just sending the head and block for a skim and clean?
Does anyone know of any descent engine overhaul companies in the East Midlands?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Cheers, Britney!

Reboring the engine if you wanted it painted? I'm sorry but that just sounds daft and a way to try and get some more cash out of you. Why not get the rings changed and paint her up yourself? If the bores were in good condition i'd personally not bother with a rebore.

Thats exactly what I was thinking! I'm not really that bothered about a rebore! I just want the engine running well as a 1.3!!!

Im planning on doing an overhaul of my engine after the mk1 meet and have been told about a good engien shop in mansfield where I live who I plan on getting a quote from to change my rings and to rebore/hone my cylinders.

Im going to be doing it myself for the experience and to save money, Im guessing what they mean is that to go to the effort of painting the block and stipping it down you may as well do a rebore while your at it?  :ocf_emoticons__dontknow:

Im not sure what sort of cost will be involved so Id like to hear how much you get quoted, but hopefully it will be less than the £800 I paid for a 'VW specialist' to rebuild my head!  O_o

Thanks for that mazza411 Where you getting yours done?
I have now decided to have a crack myself, I have stripped engines before so it shouldn't be a problem I was just wanting to take the easy option! I think the most annoying part of the engine build will be the cleaning and painting!
Spot auto engineering Derby have not got back to me with any prices yet so it looks like I won't be using them.
I have also found an engineering company that have recently opened half a mile up the road from me that sell engine stands, hoists and Mk1 Golf tailgate gas struts!!!!! How random.
A link is here if you want to have a look. http://www.sgs-engineering.com

A little bit of an update,
Spot autos have called me back with what I thought a reasonable quote of £950 pounds +VAT. That includes a re-bore, pistons, head skim, water pump, cam belt + tensioners and all the other bits and bobs associated with an engine overhaul! Now, although I am tempted to have this done, I do not want a re-bore so I have contacted Swad diesels to see if they will be happy to re-hone my bores, skim my head and check my crankshaft! Unfortunately I missed their call earlier so I will let you know what they say when I call them back tomorrow.

thought I had replied to this?  O_o
Going to ask at Mansfield engine centre to see what firgure they would give for supplying the parts and doing a rebore/hone and then do the rest myself

I hope it wont cost anywhere near £950 for my rebuild! I spent £800 on someone doing my headgasket which was a rip off so if it costs more than £400 for me then im going to just swap out the engine!

let us know what sort of figure you get from the other company though
