Radiator fan switch change

Need to change this as step one in trying to get fan working when overheats.

Do I simply drain some coolant out the system so it doesn't flown out when I unscrew the switch? Then simply rescrew the new one and top up coolant?

Seems daft I give a garage £50 for a £10 part and half hour work

Just take it out with new one ready and quickly swap. I drained my coolant fully when I did mine and swapped it for new as it was empty. Most of the water will be dropped doing it anyway.

Don't donut when waters hot though it burns a bit ;)

let it cool, undo header tank cap to release any pressure then refit it. this will ensure the least amount of coolant lost but you will still loose some, just be quick on the draw ;)

hello Neil,
the first step in checking the operation of your fan is NOT to start changing components and a decent garage wouldnt do it just for the fun of it.
Im not saying its not at fault but if you dont carry out the diagnosis first your just running about in the dark!
At least check to make sure you have power at the switch and then bridge the terminals to make sure the fan starts up.
MIND YOUR FINGERS THOUGH :)

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

All done . Fan was bridged and works so starting with the switch and not paying garage £50 to do it if it's straight forward. If still not working then gues thermostat etc.

Cheers

thats cool, if you bridged the switch and the fan came on then its the switch thats at fault :)

All done :) haven't driven car in few days so was cold. Undid lost about a mouth ful of coolant and then popped new one on. Guessed which terminal had which plug and let her heat up. Dead on half way on came the fan. :)

I like it when things work first time . Phew.

Thanks all for input. Decided against coolant change as may well need new rad in coming months as mine looks lil worse fr wear so will do all then.

Cheers guys

you know you could have just used a jug or bucket rather than trying to catch all the coolant in your mouth. I know we should respect the environment but thats taking it a bit far

on my 1.3, I've found that my temp gauge doesn't accurately reflect the water temperature. It merely generates a random angle between 'too cold' and 'it's buggered', and the fans kick in when they feel like it…
