Problems with carburator/engine

Greetings from Holland! This is my first post on this forum, i searched intensively but none of the problems seem to fit on my situation.

I've just recently bought my golf, a 1.1 engine petrol with solex carburator, and i am having some trouble with it. I bought it for 1500 euro's, practicly rust free and the engine had 148000 on it, checked by a dutch agency. I'm asking you guys for some advice on what to do next.

When i just started driving it, i noticed i had to drive with the manual choke for probably 2 miles before it wouldn't cut out at the lights. It started sputtering and cutting out while i was driving and was unreliable. I asked a neighbour to adjust the carburator, after this everything was fine. But then it started to get cold outside. First is just took a longer time to drive with te choke but after a while it wouldn't start. I renewed the airfilter, petrolfilter, spark cables, the rotorhead (i don't know the correct english term, sorry!) and the hood on which you attach the spark cables. After this it started great. But when i try accelerating it just doestn't do anything. I can give it more gas, but nothing happens. When i press the clutch i can rev the engine, but when i let it go the car doesn't really accelerate. Tested the fuel lines and pump, no problems whatsoever. Adjusted the carburator again; after half an hour of fiddling it works great, but when i wait a couple of hours it cut out again and wont stay on stationairy.

The engine oil smells like petrol and the oil level is higher then when i put it in.

I hope the story above was readable and clear, i'm dutch so i don't know all the correct terms and spelling  :redfaced:  I just cant decide what to do: Should i continue fiddling with this engine unreliable as it is or should i have someone change the engine for me?

Maybe there is a problem i overlooked?

Thanks for reading this long story and i hope you have some advice for me :)

Update

I started it this morning; everything was fine. But when i drove a couple of kilometers it started to lose power. No stalling or anything like that but some kangarooing and nothing happens when i press the gas pedal. Under 50 kilometers/hour its acceptable but it won't go above that

this problem sounds similar to what i had, mine was cutting and and not driving so well ad i got told i need a new fuel pump, but i never, i took mine into the garage and he said he cleaned out the carb, and set the timing right again, maybe you need a little clean?

Good idea

I'm going to try to clean it, but i'm not really sure on how to do this. I'll google it, there probably will be a tutorial somewhere.

Thanks for the reply!
