polo engine (facelift model)

dunno if anyone has fitted a polo 1272 engine (facelift, mpi 1993), i have got one and a 1.1 golf. will the engine go straight in if i change the gearbox mount (wanna use gt box 5 speed) or am i looking at changing it to 'big block' left mount? im lucky as in i have full car (runner), engine, box,  loom, ecu etc.  i have the black stripey interior too, looks nice, what would i have to change to get it in a mk1?
cheers,
paul

I know someone with a Polo GT engine in his MK1 Golf 1.3 - SteveMattews! PM him and he might be able to give some info! I know the Polo engine mounts in the same place as the smaller engined Golfs, it's a staight swap. Steve's got his on a pair of twin 40s.

the facelift polo engines fit straight into SMALL BLOCK engined cars with only having to change the mount from gearbox to gearbox if anyone ever needs to know, working out the loom is a whole new ballgame especially when ac and dc means wtf :|

I have been looking at doing this conversion on my mates 1.3 driver. The easiest way of doing it i have been told is to use the gt block for high compression, the gt or an 8p gearbox, and an early coupe s or polo formal e head as they have a mechanical pump or the gt head can be used with an inline electrical pump and a coupe s inlet manifold with coupe s/weber carb

the wiring of your old engine can be used as you wont be running mpi with an ecu

Cheers

hi, i put a polo gt engine in my 1.1…its running yamaha r6 bike carbs. it was really easy to do.

the engine mounts on the car do not need changing if you use a 4speed box, im not sure what needs changing if you use a 5speed box…all that i changed is the mount that is attached to the engine, this needs changing for the one off the 1.1 or older 1.3

ignition wise, i used the hall sender and coil etc from a late carbed model polo or golf…this was easy too, literally 3 or 4 wires to connect.

you also need an electronic fuel pump if you go for a newer engine.

hope some of that is usefull.

I've got the SPI AAV engine in my 1.1 Formel E. There's only 4-5 wires needed to make it all run. The only problem I've had so far is finding a good switched live. I tried one off the back of the fuse box, but the ecu isn't happy with it, so no go. At the moment I connect it direct to the battery. Feels a bit daft opening the bootm to start and stop it though. Most of the wiring colour codes are still current too.

did you rear the lift and inline fuel pump out of the polo as well?

I used a GTi tank which has a swirl pot and a 12mm pipe coming out near the GTi pump mounts. I then made up a plate to carry the pressure pump and mounted it where the GTi one would be. It has enough suck to work fine. The only problem I've had is crap from the tank jamming the pump. I took one to bits to find the problem. I now have a prefilter and it's working really well. One thing to note is that the SPI pumps have 2 types of connector. They are not interchangeable, but both will accept a spade connector, so I have one connector on the original Polo pump loom and the other ready to plug in if the pump fails and my spare is different. Hopefully this will not happen again with the prefilter in place.

we had to do the same on my mates gt converted cl as he was having similar problems with the pumps, didnt know you could take them apart though

which engine are you using the 1 litre or 1.3 as i may have a chipped ecu and induction kit forsale soon if your interested

You take them apart with tin snips. They don't go back together so well ;-)

I've got the 1.3 engine. I'd already talked to Poloace on the Porka forums, but I'm having running problems so was holding off until I'd sorted them. Tell me what you've got.
