Points set right and now doesnt run right!

Post

When checking my distributor I noticed that the points were set with no gap so quickly checked the correct gap and set it just right then I turned it over hoping that would sort all my issues out with starting up and now it runs bad :/ but does start better which is a plus. I really need some help with this.... Thanks, Matt

Did you do it simply by points gap, or dwell angle?

Electronic ignition doesn't have dwell angle. Basically, you'd need a multimeter or other meter with a dwell angle function.

So could that be the cause of the issues? so would it be better if i just set it back to no points gap?

It would run if you accurately set the points gap - no gap won't work, there needs to be a gap!

If would be better still, if you set the dwell angle to specs, its a more accurate way of setting contact points ignition.

After you've touched the points gap setting, you need to re-time the ignition too. You can set it in a basic way statically, then you'll need a strobe gun to do it while the engine is running. Its possible to do it by 'feel' once you know what you're listening/feeling for.

Those strobe guns are worth the wonga.

My brothers was very handy when it came to doing the timing on my engine.

Just don't point it into anyone's eyes

just done the timing with a new strobe but it seems to want more than 5 degrees before tdc more like 10 otherwise it gets very grumpy and cuts out. is this normal?
