Pointless Ignition?

Pointless Ignition?

Does anyone know if you can use later Polo or MK11 Golf ignition setups on the earlier 1100 and 1300 MK1 engines??? And if so what parts or mods are required?

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I don't know for sure on the small block engines, but on the big block you can swap to the later pointless ignition so I guess it's the same story. You need the dizzy and ignition module from the later car. The ignition module needs a 12v and earth feeds from the fusebox. The only part that may need looking out for is that the advance curve may be different for each engine but this should not matter too much. Strictly speaking, you should match the dizzy numbers from old to new.

The other way to go is to fit an aftermarket system from the likes of Lumenition.

I copied the following from an American web site. :- If you are swapping an engine into a pre 1981 car then it is a good idea to install the newer breakerless or hall sender style of ignition. This is a solid state ignition that doesn't need periodic points adjusting and you car will run better with a few extra hp gain. All that is necessary is to take the little black box in the rain tray and the wiring harness between this black box and the distributor.

You can fit the Polo or Mk2 Golf set-up, if you are prepared to do a bit of research into how it works, and how it integrates with your own Golf wiring, etc. Be sure to use the distributor from the same size engine as yours (1.1 or 1.3), as the advance is different, as dubboy mentioned.

I didn't have the confidence at the time I needed to replace the points, so I bought a Lumenition kit. Wasn't too cheap (about ?125 in 1994), but it transformed the car's starting, running, fuel economy, and made it a bit nippier too (strong spark all the time, not just when the points were in adjustment).

If you're very lucky, you might find one in a breakers - you should be able to use one from any four-cylinder car, and if it's not a VW, you might need the mounting kit for the Golf (about ?15 in 1994, I remember).

From my memories of the car before and after the points, I can't recommend getting rid of them highly enough(!), especially if you do a lot of motorway miles (they wear quicker at high engine speeds).

Re: Pointless Ignition?

The simplest way is to go to the scrap yard look for a mark 2 polo D-H reg you need the distributor, coil, new cap, leads and rotor arm check the vacuum chamber by sucking on it and seal with tongue and release, it should make a popping noise, cut the Negative block in half on the coil, it has a green wire next is the positive red from the battery terminal to the module which is screwed to the scuttle plate under the back plastic. Fit as appropriate the module casing itself must be earthed. PS: if a distributor cannot be found with working vacuum this is available separately from a Bosch stockist

Nope - no good.  The dizzy on the hall sender type systems has a physically bigger mounting face and does not fit the earlier heads.  If you do a full engine swap however, its dead easy.  Simple take the dizzy, wiring loom (trace it back from the hall sener - you'll end up at the battery), coil and ignition amplifier and away you go…

You need to splice into the Mk1 loom at the point where it attaches to the coil (if you are careful you can do this by pushing the connector out of the old wining block and don't even have to cut anything).  Mount the ignition amp somewhere out of the way and cable back to the battery.  Couldn't be simpler.
