NO COMPRESSION

I hopeing someone can shed some light on this for me please.

My drive is a 1983, 1.3cl. The car is a lovely little thing but is let down by a miss fire. I've had a compression test done, and there is no compression on number 1 cylinder. I was told it could be a valve not seating properly. Would it be easier to reseat the valve or get a second hand head and bolt on? A mate is currently breaking his 1.1. Would his head fit mine?

  Anyone?

As far I recall mk1 1093cc and 1272cc heads are identical. It would be quicker to swap the head for another, but you take a bit of a chance on how good the replacement head is without stripping it down - in which case you might as well recon your own head. Depends really on why why the valve is not seating properly, re-grinding the valves is about as cheap and easy as it gets.

Thanks guys,

I understand that you can adjust the valve clearance which I have tried to do, but to no really joy. I've even tried additives to the fuel for a quick fix. I was told that these engines were renowned for sticky valves.

I shall look into seeing if the 1.1 is a match with a 1.3 head. :dontknow:

crazyquiff are you looking to sell your head? or donate it to a good loving mk1 home?  Please let me know.

  Cheers Steve

Have spoken to GSF this morning, and they are telling me that a 1.1 head is not compatible with a 1.3 as the exhaust chambers are not the same. They are suggesting that the valve is bent. Unfortunately they don't stock any mk1 valves :banghead:

Will take the head off this weekend and investigate what is needed

Didn't know that - I now remeber that the pre 80 FA 1.1 had a different exhaust manifold to GG 1.1/GF 1.3. You should still be able to get the valves from VAG, if not try Euro Car Parts - got some from there last year. I would be tempted to try and keep the original head if possible. You can't really tell what is what until you've taken the head off, but maybe as simple as new valve and gaskets.
