need help big time

hi guys i need help dunno if my engine is broke ts a mk1 jetta 1.3 l 1982 manual choke if this helps when it starts if it starts lol and i rev it theres a loud knocking noise from the engine ive had problems with it starting before its had a new
coil
leads
dizzy cap
waitin on rotar arm

could it be be linked or somthing else

Isolate other things it could be, before concluding its coming from the engine internally:

- cambelt (on cover)
- water pump
- loose components within engine bay
- engine/gearbox bolts all tightened up? (yes it does happen!)
- exhaust
- suspension, even??
- manifold(s) loose
- other engine attached components loose

etc

Then listen out for whether its coming from top or bottom of the engine.

Sounds are difficult to diagnose over the internet and tricky for an amateur mechanic to know what to listen out for - so might be best seeking the opinion of a garage, once you've eliminated the basics above.

Yes - check through like paul says - could even just be a blowing manifold!

We have 1.3 engines here if needed

i take it its not great news then is it a big job
